Day 8: Ely, NV to Delta, UT

I’m backlogged a few days so a few of these posts are going to be short because I can’t really remember that well! Sorry, fans! On day 8 we drove into Utah which was pretty cool. Haven’t been there since I was like, 8 or 9 at Bryce Canyon/Zion Nat’l Park. I guess that was the same time that I was last in Nevada (I’ve switched over to the NevADDa pronunciation, btw). So not much change there.

I really like the “Life Elevated” slogan
A nice downhill stretch of US 50

Utah looked very different from how I remember. I don’t really remember that trip that well, but I remember Utah looked how I imagined Mars would look. Dry, red, barren, beautiful.

We left Ely pretty early and we had a 12 mile day. I was paired with Leah which was really fun, we talked about a lot of different things and I felt like I really got to know her better. Again, a running theme, pun intended, the people and the connections are my favorite part of 4K. The connections with both my teammates and the locals are just… fantastic.

On the way to Delta we ran by this huuuge patch of sand, which was actually sort of out of place in this part of the desert. It was about a half mile off the road, so we left the van on the shoulder and decided to explore. It turned out to be Sevier Lake, an intermittent lake that’s been dry for most of recorded history. I recommend clicking the link and reading about intermittent lakes, it’s really fascinating! The sand was moist, relative to the rest of the desert, and it made for some wild photo opportunities.

Been through the desert on a horse with no name

We arrived at Delta, UT, High School and the facilities there were great. All in all the day was pretty uneventful. Nothing too much to report.
